Joseph Bertiers paintings reminded me in a way of the kinds of comic books I used to read as a child where you'd have a double page showing a scene with lots of characters doing different things and the more you looked the more jokes or funny stories you'd notice.
Only the stories in Joseph Bertiers paintings probably aren't suitable for children. He pokes fun at world leaders and political events.
The article below describes how Bertiers used to display his work in a cafe and then sit down to listen to what people had to say about the paintings, without revealing that he was the artist. He says "they talk about the work being by a crazy man" Having seen them I'm not altogether surprised that people had that reaction as some of the scenes are a little bit crazy. And I have no idea why there are so many cats in the paintings.
