SOAS Special Collections

There was no photography allowed in the SOAS Special Collections, which is a bit of a shame.  They had a lot of different things from art to artifacts.  African art seems to pop up in unexpected places!

African art:

Matooke (Green Banana) by J Muyango, a student from Makerere University,  Uganda, was painted for an exam in the early 1960s.  This was my favourite thing in the gallery.

Colourful Slum by Ehigbor Iyoghioje from Nigeria painted in 2000.

Mother and Child by Margaret Towel from the 1940s, Uganda.

Akaba People's Prodigal Son (at least I think that's what it was called when I try to read my notes) by Kyalo son of Ngila from Kenya.

There was also a Nepalese Buddhist manuscript made from gouache ink and paper of Karandavyuha (Manifestation of Appearances according to the Gallery) and an Armenian manuscript.

The Brunei Gallery: A venue for Asian, African and Middle Eastern Art in the Heart of London

The Brunei Gallery was opened in 1995 following a donation to the School of Oriental and African Studies by the HM the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam (hence the name of the gallery).

There is the small Japanese garden on the roof

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is London's only Cambodian restaurat up in Camden.

I had a coconut water drink and spring chilli chicken which was a light, refreshing chicken dish with mango, cucumber, cabbage, red onion and coriander in a sweet chilli sauce.

A prince far from home

Prince Lee Boo of Palau is buried in St Mary's Church in Rotherhithe.

Back in 1782 a ship of the East India Company was shipwrecked off the islands that now make up the Republic of Palau.  The crew managed to make it to one of the islands, which happened to be uninhabited and soon met the leader of the archipelago Abba Thule.

Abba Thule helped the English men in exchange for their assistance in subduing some rival villagers.

When it was time for the crew to head back home Abba Thule requested that the crew take his second young Lee Boo back to England so that he could learn about England.  Lee Boo stayed with the captain of the expedition who was a resident of Rotherhithe and came to visit St Mary's church.

Sadly, less than 6 months after he arrived in London Prince Lee Boo died of smallpox and is buried here.

Also the Mayflower set sail to the US from Rotherhithe and a plaque at St Mary Church commemorates the event.

The Norwegian Church

The Norwegian Church in London is just down the road from the Finnish Church in Rotherhithe (and miles from the Swedish Church which is in Edgware Road).

Scare devil

From the Nicobar Islands.  This wooden and cloth fellow would have been placed outside a house in order to stop bad spirits coming in.

At the Maritme Museum.

Hola Paella

A Spanish delicatessan and cafe in Greenwich.

Brazilian Churros

At Greenwich market there are range of stalls selling food from different countries. I'd just had lunch but managed to find room for a tasty brazilian snack, rolled in cinnamon sugar and filled with chocolate and caramel sauce.  These churros seem to be different from Spanish ones in that they are much bigger and hollow so that you can fill them with chocolatey goodness.

You can also try food from Japan, China, Thailand, Portugal and Ethiopia (below),

Vivir con honor o morir con gloria

A statue to the curiously name Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme, whose name makes sense once you know that he was a man of Chilean and Irish descent.  He played a role in the Chilean struggle for independence during the first part of the 19th century.

Bernardo O´Higgins spent time during his late teens living and workingin Richmond which is why this bust of him can be found there.

German School

Just came across this German school whilst I was out and about in Richmond.

The installation is a maze made out of clear plastic spelling and coloured light spelling out the word UNITY.  It represents the Olympic spirit.

African Art in London

I seem to actually have a few readers these days if the traffic section of my blog is anything to go by!

So I wanted to share this great blog that I consult regularly: http://africanartinlondon.wordpress.com/

Most of the art exhibitions that I've been to I discovered thanks to this blog.  It's been a great help. not just for my project but for my own personal art education. Thank you African Art in London!

The Other Side of Paradise

The Other Side of Paradise at the October Gallery is an exhibition by Palestinian artist Laila Shawa in response to a documentary she saw about a female suicide bomber who was caught at a checkpoint.

Laila Shawa makes clear in the exhibtion that she is not condoning the actions of the suicide bomber and does not want to come down on one side or the other of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The exhibition will run until the end of March 2012.  You can find more information about the artist here: www.lailashawa.com

Tiwani Contemporary

Tiwani Contemporary is a new gallery that has recently opened near to Oxford Circus.  They currently have an exhibition called Synchronicity by a collective of artists called On the Roof.

More information as soon as I can find the information sheet I got from the gallery.

Monument to the Third International

The Royal Academy of Arts has a 1:42 scale model of Vladimir Tatlin's Monument to the Third International in the courtyard.

Tatlin had plans to build this tower in St Petersburg 1920.  Sadly the project was never realised.

Goncalo Mabunda at Jack Bell Gallery

Goncalo Mabunda is the creator of sculptures made from decommissioned weapons similar to the ones that are on display in the Africa Gallery in the British Musem.

He has used the weapons to evoke masks and has also created several thrones.
