Land of Poetry

Land of Poetry is a 'patchwork of poetry from across the UK.'  The poems are displayed down on the Southbank.

Europe in Meltdown

The Portobello Film Festival is a fantastic idea - a free film festival just down the road from my house! Thank you London!!!

The pop up cinema is under the Westway at the end of Acklam Road.  I anticipated that the cinema might be outdoors and took an extra layer of clothing and a flask of tea along with me.  I arrived just before the start of the films so didn't have chance to get any photos.

The films I saw in the 'Europe in Meltdown' shorts series:

- Rites, a Scottish film set in London about the relationship between a father and his son.

- Battenburg, another Scottish film about a creepy squirrel who lives in a strange house.

- Out of Erasers, a Swedish film about a strange scribble man who chases a woman through the city.

- Heavy Heads, a Danish animated film about a woman,a housefly and a sad man.

- Tejo, a Portuguese film noir thriller about an inspector investigating a murder.

- Homesick Scientists, a German film about a field expedition of scientists who encounter some difficulties.

- Upstream, another German film about a man who gets some advice from the river Elba.

- The beardless Garibaldi, an Italian gangster caper.

Photos from all the films listed above in order (except Rites)

Lebanese food on Edgware Road

After a day out together my friend Mark and I were feeling quite peckish so we took a stroll along Edgware Road to see what we could find.

We opted for a Lebanese restaurant and decided to pick two starters each rather than a main so that we could try a wider variety of food.

We got some olives and bread for free at the beginning of the meal as well as two pastries for dessert at the end.

Spicy sausages

Karaoke

This was my very first visit to a proper karaoke bar and I was a bit nervous as I have not been blessed with a singing voice.

However, I was surprised how much fun I had.  I think it helped that none of us were particularly good singers and we put on a few silly songs such as Barbie Girl by Aqua and Macarena by Los del Mar.  I think the highlight of our session was Marco singing his very own adaptation of Stevie Wonder's 'Happy Birthday' for Kartik which had us all almost in tears (of laughter I should add).

The karaoke machine had songs in Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English.  We selected which song we wanted using the little stylus and lined them all up.

Man bites dog

Joseph Bertiers paintings reminded me in a way of the kinds of comic books I used to read as a child where you'd have a double page showing a scene with lots of characters doing different things and the more you looked the more jokes or funny stories you'd notice.

Only the stories in Joseph Bertiers paintings probably aren't suitable for children.  He pokes fun at world leaders and political events.

The article below describes how Bertiers used to display his work in a cafe and then sit down to listen to what people had to say about the paintings, without revealing that he was the artist. He says "they talk about the work being by a crazy man" Having seen them I'm not altogether surprised that people had that reaction as some of the scenes are a little bit crazy.  And I have no idea why there are so many cats in the paintings.

Russkij Bazar

This Russian, Polish and Ukrainian food shop in Cambridge Heath sells Kvass for 50p! They even sold the brand that I had to drink when I went to Assorti restaurant back in June.  Although Cambridge Heath is a bit far from where I live, it's much closer than Russia.

Initiation mask

Another item from Kenya, this time an initiation mask.
